Learning to make choices is an important skill for not only children with autism, but everyone. Unfortunately, teaching children to make choices can be tough. With the language barrier and comprehension barrier that children with autism already have, choices are an intermediate skill for them. Teaching children decisions is nearly impossible if they don’t already have the prerequisite skills.
However, there are some techniques you can implement to help make teaching kids to make choices a bit easier. Some of the best tools that I can recommend are all related to visuals. If the child can see the choices, they are more likely to be able to pick something that they prefer. I cover more of the details behind these techniques in today’s autism video.
