The natural light that comes in through your windows is perfect for lighting a vlog. There are just a few things to keep in mind when using a window as your main light source.
Shooting with a window next to you will cast a shadow over half of your face, so you will need to fill that shadow either using a household lamp or a reflector. Reflectors (aka a “Bounce”) are used to redirect light from an existing source.
Or, instead of vlogging with the window beside you, you can use it as a front light. Just face the window while you film. This will get you even light over your entire face. That makes front lighting with a window a great setup for beauty vloggers.
Be careful while front lighting that your vlog doesn’t end up looking flat. What I mean by ‘flat’ is that the evenness of the light hitting both you and your background will erase dimensions and you won’t stand out from what is behind you.
To better separate yourself from your background, use a backlight. Your backlight can be either a lamp or a reflector set up behind you. When light hits you from behind it creates a darker outline that helps you pop out.
It is because of this same effect that you generally shouldn’t use a window as a backlight.
Backlighting yourself with a window will turn you into a dark silhouette, which can look pretty cool in an artsy kind of shot but does not work for a vlog. There’s also a good chance that the reflection of your camera will show up in the window behind you.
