In addition to the rack system discussed above I use two pieces of 7mm Accessory Cord that are 30 feet long form REI. This is enough to secure four kayaks to my car safely. Note if you are carrying really long racing kayaks or sea kayaks it is a very good idea to use bow and stern lines to help secure the load and reducing any swaying. I use bow and stern lines when transporting my Liquidlogic Stinger kayak for example. The boats featured in this video are two Liquidlogic Remix kayaks sizes 69 and 70 and a Liquidlogic Braaap.
I suppose this video could have been called how to secure a load using trucker hitches. Cam straps can and do fail often without warning. I have found the spring that locks the strap in place is the weak link when using cam straps. Using cord or rope prevent mechanical failure like broken springs. Each time you secure boats you will notice the condition of your rope. I work/live on the river so my ropes are used much more often than many others would; yet the ropes last for several years before being retired for campground clothesline duty etc.
