In this video recorded at ANU on Monday, 18 September Professor Brian P. Schmidt talks about his teaching, as part of the ANU Educational Fellowship Scheme (EFS) Philosophy of Teaching and Learning series.
Over one hour, Professor Schmidt inspired his audience with a range of topics, including his back story in teaching, why he loves to teach, the most important things he believes he can do as a teacher, and the primary question he is posing to himself as a teacher in 2017: ‘What do I offer that Wikipedia, khan Academy or a MOOC doesn’t? Why should people want to come to my class under their own volition?’ He also discussed his thoughts on the topic of whether the lecture is dead, and provided some examples of innovative things he has done in his teaching, including Astro Mysteries and Astro Jeopardy.
