Brent from Gray House Studio will be using a jigsaw to show you how to cut a custom shape out of a piece of wood.
1. WEAR SAFETY GEAR – Any time you use power tools, you have to think about safety. We are going to use safety glasses and ear protection.
2. SECURE THE FOOT PLATE – Double check that the foot plate is nice and secure so it doesn’t rotate. If is loose you can grab a screw driver and tighten it to prevent it from wiggling loose while cutting.
3. CHOOSE THE CORRECT BLADE – There are many different types of blades like a wood blade for making tight turns, a wood blade for making fast cuts and metal blades. When selecting a blade, be sure to pick one based on the type of cut and material you are using. Be sure to pick a blade that is at least an inch longer than your board it thick. This will allow the blade to penetrate all the way through the material and prevent it from jamming in the material causing it to break or bend.
4. CLAMP YOUR PROJECT DOWN – Before you start cutting your board, clamp it to the work space so you can focus on the jigsaw and not the work piece.
5. KEEP TRACK OF THE CORD – Always keep track of the cord. It is easy to make a turn and not pay attention and then cut over the cord.
6. CUT FROM THE OUTSIDE TO INSIDE – Start your cut on the outside and save the inside for last. This will make your piece the most structurally sound and keep it from breaking.
7. DRILL HOLES FOR INTERNAL CUTTING – Once you finish cutting the outside of your shape with the jigsaw, take a drill and drill holes through the inside of each shape you plan to cut with the jigsaw. With all the holes drilled, clamp your piece back down and you can use the jigsaw starting at the holes you drilled and going around each shape.
8. MAKE MULTIPLE CUTS – Don’t try and make the perfect cut in one pass. Make multiple cuts and come back and clean up areas that don’t look good the first time.
