Coronavirus: Ontario school boards allocated up to $500M in reserve funding | FULL

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced on Thursday that the province will be allowing school boards to access up to $500 million in local reserves to fund initiatives that will increase physical distancing as educators prepare for back-to-school amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lecce was joined by chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams to make the announcement.

The minister also announced that the government will be spending $50 million to update school HVAC systems, and another $18 million for principal and support staff hires to help administer online learning.

“We are consistently adding health and safety measures to our layers of prevention, Lecce said.” “We’re taking monumental steps to protect your children and the classroom that they learn and grow.”

Lecce’s announcement came only a day after Premier Doug Ford was faced with questions about the risks of having students return to school in the fall.

On Thursday, Ontario reported 78 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths, however it noted that numbers from Toronto Public Health were not available resulting in an “underestimation” of the daily numbers.
